Robert W. Schuman, MD
Dr. Robert Schuman received his BA from the University of Pennsylvania, where he graduated with high honors. He received his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine. Dr. Schuman completed his residency and fellowship in Gastroenterology at Cornell University Medical Center, The New York Hospital and Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. He also completed training at Mt. Sinai Medical Center as a member of the Liver Transplant Team. He was a member of the full time faculty of Cornell University – New York Hospital, until he joined Affiliates in Gastroenterology in 1995.
Dr. Schuman is board certified in Gastroenterology and Hepatology and is a member of numerous national societies in Gastroenterology and Hepatology. He is a past president of the New Jersey Gastroenterology Society. He is skilled in endocsopy and has performed thousands of colonoscopies, upper endoscopies and ERCP’s.
Dr. Schuman is Director of Clinical Research at Affiliates in Gastroenterology and currently is the principal investigator in trials studying Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, IBS and hepatitis. He received the Presidents Choice Award from the American Society of Liver Diseaeses and has presented his research at national and international meetings in the field of Gastroenterology.
Dr. Schuman is a physician adviser for the American Cancer Society, as well as a member of the Cancer Committee at Saint Barnabas Medical Center and frequently lectures on the benefits of colon cancer screening. He is the vice president and future president of the medical staff at Saint Barnabas and was honored as “Specialist of the Year” for his clinical skills and teaching abilities. Other accolades include a ranking in “Guide to America’s Top Physicians” by the Consumer Research Council of America and listing as one of the “Best Doctors” by Better Living Magazine.
Dr. Schuman is a sports enthusiast, an avid Duke basketball fan and enjoys golf, skiing, travel and spending time with his wife and two sons. Dr. Schuman sees patients at the West Orange office.
